Ihsan Azzam, MD, MPH
Dr. Ihsan Azzam is the Nevada State Epidemiologist, Nevada State Health Division, headquartered in Carson City . Dr. Azzam is responsible for the management of disease investigation throughout the State of Nevada . He directs and provides oversight of the disease investigation staff dealing with communicable disease outbreaks, chronic disease clusters, and analysis of surveillance data and trends. He provides consultation on health policy to the Administrator, Nevada State Health Division, Director, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and to Governor Kenny C. Guinn, State of Nevada . He serves the residents of a state with one of the most geographically dispersed populations in the nation with only three counties having local health departments, leaving 14 rural and frontier counties who depend solely on the Nevada State Health Division for public health services. Nevada has a population of more than 2.3 million, with more than 50 million visitors entering the state each year. Dr. Azzam received his Doctoral degree in Medicine from the University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, in 1982. He completed his Masters in Public Health at the University of Nevada , Reno , in 2002. Dr. Azzam is a PhD candidate at the Environmental Science and Health at the University of Nevada , Reno . He is fluent in several languages. He is married to Marta Ylvia, and they have two children. He enjoys coaching soccer and serves as a regional referee for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) in northern Nevada and neighboring states.
